First Thunder Chicken
|
This is my son's first turkey! We chased the big boys around all morning. We came upon 4 jakes and he decided it was time to pull the trigger. Had the bird at 15 yards and the 20 gauge rang out and the bird laid flopping on the forest floor. He was very excited as was I! Now, it's time to go get his first striper. I love spring!

Late Posting - Veterans Day Doe
|
I shot this doe with my new Bowtech Admiral at around 7:00 AM. I was hunting this old pear orchard behind my house. It's really thick and the deer love to just hang out, bed and graze through the area. I got in early, but I still jumped deer? This didn't deter me and I still hunted the orchard because of all the great deer sign. In short, I saw a total of 8 deer and none of them where wearing any headgear or offering any shots! At around 7:00 AM a doe working her way through the cedars from the west eventually came into the orchard. To make a long story short again - I waffled her with a RAGE head at 14 yards and watched here fall at 60 yards! She's a mature doe and I was glad to provide my management services. I thanked god and headed home for the wheel barrel. I also had my thirteen year old son gut her out - he did pretty well for the first time!

Late Posting - Opening Day Buck
|
I know, I am a little late posting, but here's my opening day buck. He's a 5-point, but would have been a solid 8 if he didn't break his right side off. Looks like he may have broken it early in the season? He has a 3-inch brown hook growing off the broken stub. It appears almost hollow when you tap it - I think it gives him some character? Anyway, shot him around 10:30 AM at about 100 yards. I set up before dark glassing some large fields and valleys. I spent the whole morning walking and glassing. Saw a total of 12 deer - all does. While walking up a large open hill to try another spot, I decided to look back. When I did, I saw a deer looking at me! I was amazed - I just glassed that area! As I brought the binoculars up, I new exactly what buck it was. I set my backpack on the ground, laid flat on the wet grass, centered the crosshairs on his shoulder and squeezed - bang! He kicked, ran about 50 yards and dropped. I thanked good for blessing me and allowing me this opportunity. I also have two more late postings - I shot a buck and a doe with the bow, I will post them soon. Time for the muzzleloader!!!!

Turkey in the Oven!
|
Well, I finally connected this morning with a gobbler! It's been a tough season for me. Almost pulled the trigger a couple of times, but just couldn't make it happen. I've been hunting since the weekend before regular season with my son on the youth hunt. That's a great program. Anyway, recently on my way to work I've been seeing some nice birds about a mile from my house. There are a couple of nice toms and they are always showing off for the ladies. I decided I was going to get out early this morning, listen and come up with a game plan. At 4:50 AM the birds where already going nuts. I set up a hen decoy without the b-mobile, behind me and practically underneath the birds (ambush). I waited until 5:15 AM and started to make some soft clucks and light yelps. The gobbler answered every time and I could here the hens yelping also! At 5:25 AM a hen flew down right at my decoy. Soon after that, the tom and another hen joined them. The gobbler was in the field and heading towards my decoy. At 35 yards I clucked, purred and yelped. He picked his head up, I squeezed off the round and my 3-inch magnum heavy shot number 4's connected! He rolled and it was all over at 5:30 AM. I thanked god for blessing me and headed home. He's 19 lbs., 9 3/4-inch beard and 1 1/8-inch spurs.

Second Day Success!
|
Sorry this took so long, but it's been real crazy lately. I shot this 6 pntr. on the second day of gun season. I hunted real hard opening day and Sunday morning, passing up at least 4 smaller bucks. I was in stand overlooking a small overgrown field. This field is a great spot and I've shot at least 5 deer out of it in prior years. As long as the wind is right, you will see deer. Well, the wind was perfect and at 4:30 PM a bunch of shot rang out to the West (behind me). I mean like 10 shots?!?! At 4:45 a deer came running into the field and gave me a quartering away shot at 60 yards. I saw he had some headgear and decided to take the shot. The shot went out and I saw him stumbling and bumbling and then collapse before he could reach the woods (about 70 yards). As I approached the deer, I saw he was a decent rack 6 pntr. with a huge body! I thanked god for blessing me and then called my brother-law to get the 4 wheeler fired up. Made a lot of burger and stew out of that boy!

My Doe
|
Here's a better picture of my doe I shot during the season. She came by the tree at 18 yards and I waffled her through both lungs. Ran about 50 yards and dropped. Sorry I haven't posted much, but I've been hunting hard! Saw 5 different bucks yesterday and 3 at the same time, all chasing does! The bucks are really moving and dogging does! Gonna try and get out one more time before the damn gun hunters :o) start shooting up the woods!

3 Legged Yote
|
Here's a picture of a three legged coyote I shot with the bow yesterday afternoon. When I first saw it, I couldn't believe it only had three legs! The leg was completely healed over and seemed to be doing fine? Well, fine until I shot it! I thought I was doing it a favor? It was a good size female with a beautiful coat.

Long Hard Fight
|
Finally (phew), I have a bird in the hand! Shot this gobbler around 8:00 AM this morning. He came in with a bruiser, but this guy was closer. No decoys, just little purrs and a 30 yard sneak on my belly to make a 30 yard shot. I don't know what it was, but there was turkeys gobbling everywhere this morning??? Anyway, he weighs 20 lbs., 10-inch beard and has just over 1-inch spurs.

Opening Day
|
A lot of action today! Probably about 10 different Toms. Messed up on one and got one out of the 3 of us. I called in a nice Tom for my buddy Chris - 20 lb., 1" spurs and 9 1/2" beard (see photo). Got the B-Mobile from Primos - worked awesome! Heading out again this weekend again. A lot of birds are still out there, so get out and go get them! Good Luck to everyone!

Still Going!
|
I went out all weekend - today was awesome! Saw a lot of deer and a few small bucks. No shooters though, let them grow for next year! I jumped 15 deer behind my house this past Friday - they're all bedded on the back ridge! Looks like this is the end - time for small game!

Shot this doe about 4:40 PM at 55 yards near a marshy area in the river bottom. Ran about 50 yards with a 7mm bullet straight through her heart!! She weighs 160 pounds!!! hahaha, she's not even close to that, I will weigh her later! She's a mature doe and was all alone (no bucks or little ones).

Planning on heading out Thurs. morning - still a lot of bucks out there! Saw a decent buck (Monday) on the road in a field on my way home - maybe I'll cross paths with him this Thurs.?

Hollowville, nothing personal, just a little advice. I wrote that blog last night after I got home from two days in Buffalo. I have to admit when I saw the picture, my daughter was at the computer with me and I had to close it very quick. Eventually I'm hoping she will hunt with her brother and I. Don't get me wrong, she's seen many dead deer and has had her picture taken with many of them! Your a great guy and from talking with you an ethical person. Here's a great site to check out and really explains what we are talking about.

Just my opinion
|
Wow! I go away for two days and the whole blog lights up! I know Im late in replying, but I feel I need to say something. Hollowville, great shot and hunt- poor choice with the picture though (head shot with the bow would not of been my first choice). I would never of posted that picture, just told the story (sorry). Now I will lecture: I've hunted for 25 years and I've always paid respect to the animals I've killed. I made sure the deer was cleaned up; even made sure the tongue was in his mouth before the picture was taken. We owe respect to the animal before and after the kill. We owe the animal a quick, clean ethical kill. We dont make poor shot placement decisions or shoot out of our capability. We shouldnt even post it on this blog if we did!!!! We practice daily or as frequently as possible. We don't need the antis breathing down our neck! I believe casualobserver said it best "it's about presentation and how we as hunters present ourselves to the general public". Unfortunately, we live in a society where we as hunters are the minority! We just need to be a little more diplomatic (not hide) in the way we post in our blog. Let's not fuel any fires and keep this incredible privilege of hunting lasting and going for many, many generations to come!

The rut is definitely kicking in! I had 13 does and 4 bucks (one nice 8) out in front of me tonight. The bucks are grunting and running does! I watched 2 bucks go at it for nearly 5-minutes! It is prime time to be in the woods, so get your huntingnuts butts out there and go get em!

2nd Day Hit!
|
Well, I hit a decent 7 or 8 at exactly 6:10 PM The hit was a little high and back, but when I saw the fletch buried, I swear it was a good hit?!? I watched him run off with my arrow and I gave him a half hour. Picked up blood right away and then lost it? I backed out and decided to give him some time. Well it's now 9:30 PM and I have no deer! I lost his blood trail and I'm heading back in the morning to try and pick it up! This guy is a scrapper though, he was pushing other bucks around just before he walked past my stand at 20 yards. Hopefully I can post back with good story?

My buddy Chris got a bird (see other photo) and we tried to make it a triple with my father in-law, but no luck. Oh well, maybe this weekend?

Wow, Ms. Bowman's deer has a nice Rack! Man, I would love to share a ground blind with her! I never see any bow hunters that look like that in Greene County? Second Day Success!
|
This is by far my best buck with a bow! I missed opening day and I wasn't able to get out until the afternoon on Sunday. I've been so busy, I wasn't even going to go out? Wow, I'm glad I did! He came in at 20 yards and I took him at 5:45 PM. He ran about 80 yards and dropped. I haven't weighed him yet, but he's a bruiser. I was just hoping for a doe - right place at the right time I guess? The thing is, there's at least two more like him that I've scouted and one is twice the size! Now I can catch up on some work...maybe? I'll tell the whole story (it's good)and show a few more pics later on.

those decoys really do the trick! I also called in for my father in-law his first turkey ever. It was just a Jake, but it's a good start. Good luck to anyone out there giving it a go this spring.

A Long Morning Hunt
|
With a management tag to fill I headed out early this morning. I stalked from sunrise to around 11:00 AM. Finally, I came across 7 does together as I was glassing down a steep hillside. I picked out what looked like the largest one and put a 90-yard shot on her. She kicked, went 30-yards and dropped! She's 110 lbs. and I would say about 2 1/2 years old after looking at her teeth.

Sunday Afternoon
|
My nine-year-old son asked if we could go out hunting Sunday afternoon. Of course I said and with a doe tag to fill, we headed to the woods at around 3:00 PM. We couldn't of been set up for more than twenty minutes when a nice 6-pointer shows up and offers a 40-yard broadside shot! Wow, unbelievable the opportunities with the gun this year. I wish my bow season had gone this well! Anyway, I let him pass and about 15 minutes later a small doe offers a broadside shot at 60-yards. Being a little on the small side I decided to pass and she eventually walked off. Another 15 minutes later a flock of about 12 turkeys with three really nice long beards made their way past us. We watched them until they roosted as the sun set and headed out of the woods. Even though we didn't kill anything it was a very enjoyable quality time well spent :o) Heres another pic of my Nine-pointer. I will be emailing all the numbers, pictures and permit to Elmer this week.

Thanksgiving Day Buck
|
OK...heres the story. I got up Thanksgiving morning at 4:30 AM very excited to hunt, but it was dark (of course) and snowing real heavy, so I decided to hold-off for a while. At 6:45 AM two shots rang out across the street and I jumped out of bed and got dressed as quick as I could. I was really upset with myself for oversleeping! I then headed out behind the house (saw nothing) and made my way to the main road, walked the road for a bit to get into some woods where I thought a nice 8-pointer would be hanging out. I saw this buck the night before when I was out spotting for deer at 11:30 PM. As I slowly made my way through the woods (about 300 yards in) I saw what looked like a deer to the north of me about 80 yards out. I raised the scope and it was a small 6-pointer! I thought to myself hell, Thanksgiving morning with the first accumulative snow fall, I may have to shoot this guy? As I stalked to get closer for a clearer shot at the deer, I saw another deer - a nicer buck (an 8-pointer)! Wow, two bucks on Thanksgiving morning - unbelievable! All of a sudden the two deer turned towards each other and started fighting. That gave me the perfect opportunity to get even closer for a shot at the nicer deer. As I was making my approach, all of a sudden a doe ran right between me and the two bucks? I thought I was busted?...but that wasnt the case she was being chased by this nice 9-pointer! I immediately bleated with my mouth to get him to stop, but every time I called, he would always stop just past my planned opening for a shot! Before I even realized he was gone over the hill where the doe had went. I knew I had to get to that spot and that buck, so I started making my way as slowly as I could to where I last saw him. All of a sudden the two bucks had stopped fighting and started heading where the 9-pointer went. I thought I was never going to get to him and the deer would see me as we where all heading to the same spot. I guess we all wanted to catch up with him, but I knew I had to get to that spot, so I kept on stalking and waiting for the two deer to bust me. All of a sudden I saw the 9-pointer coming back over the hill towards the two bucks. I bleated to him again, but this time he took off trotting towards the bucks - I bleated again and he stopped, but no shot! Again, he took off and I bleated the loudest this time and he stopped, looked my way and started walking right in my direction. He walked completely out of all the saplings and brush and opened himself up for my shot that rang out at around 7:45 AM! He kicked like a mule and bounded to the hill where the bucks had been fighting and stood broadside looking back towards me at about 60 yards. I chambered another round and put one behind the shoulder; he stumbled and went out of sight over the hill. I thought I had to have hit him, but still second guessed myself? All I knew is that I had to get to that hill, so I made my way to the hill where I had last seen him and in the distance I saw the two smaller bucks without him. As I glassed for him in the distance I heard something to my right and at 15 yards he laid there on the snow taking his last breathes. I was very excited and thanked god for blessing me on this beautiful snowy Thanksgiving morning.

A Good Site
|
Here's a real good site to check out. I know that it's a real hard thing to do (with all the time and money put into it). But, we need to let some of these smaller deer live and pass them up. I'm guilty myself for not doing it, but in a few short years we would all have good mature quality deer! I think it would be great if NY enforced or adopted a quality deer management program. Check it out... www.qdma.org

Hard to believe the season is coming to an end. I saw some great deer this season with not many opportunities!?! I believe a lot of the old deer spots where not being used because of the lack of acorns. I also believe the deer patterns changed to mostly traveling and using the fields at night (at least in Greene County). Let's hope for a better season next year. One thing that made this bow season a little more interesting was I had to keep a DEC log of all my bow hunting places, wildlife seen and hours in the stand. When I was finished, I tallied up my total hours of hunting and I was amazed at the time. I had over 80 hours of bow hunting in 5 weeks! That's over 2 hours of hunting each day for the entire length of bow season! Now, I know why my wife gets so frustrated with me!!! Well, she's going to keep being frustrated....now it's time to bring on the small game!

3-Pointer In The Freezer
|
OK, it's the last weekend of southern bow before the big day and I've decided to lower my standards. I've passed on many small bucks this year hoping that some of the bigger deer I've scouted out earlier this year would come by. Since that wasn't the case....when Mr. 3-Pointer decided to take the wrong trail that leads past my tree stand - I decided to take him. Besides, you can't eat the antlers anyway!?! At 7:30 AM I heard him coming a mile away and I recognized him right away from the night before, accompanied by a nice 8-pointer. This deer was definitely in rut and had only one thing on his mind! As he approached my stand within 25 yards I drew the bow back, but the deer decided to do a little trot past the tree. So, with the bow at full draw still, I shifted 180 degrees in the other direction and as he went under the stand at 11 yards out - I bleated, he stopped and I shot! Perfect pass threw!! He ran 30 yards the other way and wondered what the heck had just happened? Within 30 seconds from taken the shot the deer lay dead on the same trail that he just walked in on. I thanked god immediately for the deer and the shot. Right at this moment, I smell the tenderloins baking in the oven as Im finishing my log :o)

A Good Day
|
Feeling lucky Saturday morning I head out to my spot that is full with deer rubs. I'm in before light and I sit until I get a call (8:45 AM) from my wife that breakfast is ready, if I want to come home and make it hint-hint . Since I took Friday off to hunt all day and I intended on hunting the rest of the weekend, I took her up on her breakfast invitation and started to pack-up my stuff. Just about 300 yards from home as I'm walking out, I see a doe in the field watching me (to far). I move on and see another doe (part of the same field) and then another. As I make my way through a clearing I see another doe at about 35 yards out, broadside and looking at me. I discreetly move 10 yards closer and range her at 25 yards out. With my tree stand and backpack on, I place the pin above her shoulder and pull the trigger. Oomph! (double lungs) I here and see the hit! She bounds away about 40 yards, crashes and dies. To make a long story short I have her home by 10:00. AM and breakfast is ready by 10:30 AM.

Start of a New Season
|
As of October 1st, Ive spent most of my time in the field with my Labrador, hunting those fall ring necks. So far this season Ive taken five roosters (good eats). Theres nothing like the feeling of trailing behind your dog after getting birdie on a rooster, only to have it flush-up cackling 15 yards out, taking the shot and watching the feathers fly! - Now, thats a rush!
Ive only bow hunted a few times this year, but that soon will change. I plan on taking some days off and hunting hard on the weekends. There are some real nice bucks around and I have the video footage to prove it. As soon as I get the chance to download it, Ill send it to elmerfudd and have it posted on the site. Good luck to everyone this year!

New Baltimore - Greene County
|
Well, I didn't get much hunting done this weekend - not by my choice, but of my wifes...my list is a mile long. Anyway, hoping to fill my DMP I squeezed a couple hours in last night. As I was trying to leave and get to the woods, I couldn't find my keys to the quad. After losing a half hour of hunting time searching, I gave up and took the truck down the road. With not much time left in the day I quickly set up on top of a knoll along the edge of a hidden field (fields are real hot right now). I've seen a lot of deer hitting the fields as early as 4:00 PM. As I sat comfortably in this crease I get a phone call. It's my wife and she tellls me there's 4 deer in the back yard and if I want one, I better get home quickly. Not wanting to shoot the 'family deer' I declined the offer (I don't think she was serious anyway) said thanks and goodbye. No sooner did I say goodbye and put my phone away, there was deer already walking into the field 60 yards out! I watched and waited to see if anything else would enter the field, but after about 5 minutes of anticipation, I picked out the largest doe and decided to take her. As I maneuvered myself into position I got a real steady rest on a mound of dirt. Set the crosshairs on the shoulder and squeezed. BAMMM!-I never saw a deer jump so high in the air before - amazing! She ran 30 yards and dropped in full stride. It was 4:10 PM and decided to wait till 4:45 PM. Being confused of the shot location, most of the deer never even left the field. I watched and waited and then called my brother in-law to meet me with his quad (since mine was home without keys). A great afternoon and I thanked god for blessing me. Oh yeah, I found my keys later that evening
at least it stayed clean and didnt get all bloodied.

Greene County - New Baltimore
|
Well, it's been a long hard bow season. I had only two opportunities at deer and both times the shot wasn't there. I haven't even seen a buck (only at night) until the last day of bow season and that was this eight pointer!
Sunday: I saw this buck Sunday dogging does and running them all morning. I tried several attempts to get a shot off at him, but he would just stay out of bow range. This testosterone crazed buck had only one thing on his mind and he didn't even care about me trying to stalk him several times! I went home unsuccessful and to get ready for that afternoon. On my way in (afternoon) I ended up jumping him and a bunch of does - I saw nothing the rest of the day.
Monday: I sat in my stand from 5:20 AM until 10:30 AM and saw absolutely nothing. I headed home to drop off my stand and gear - and was heading out on foot to spend the next few hours in the woods. Right at 12:00 noon as I was approaching the same spot I was hunting this buck Sunday. I saw a deer at the top of this high ridge heading north quickly. As I brought the scope up to make it out, I immediately saw it was a buck. I found an opening just ahead of him, got a nice rest against a tree and waited for his approach. As he entered the spot I loudly bleated to him and he stopped perfectly broadside. I set my cross hairs a little high (distance was 100 plus yards) and squeezed off the round. He never kicked, ran or nothing - he just dropped and tumbled down the hill. When I got to him I knelt down immediately and thanked god for blessing me on opening day.

Right now I don't have much to report yet. Oh yeah, went out last night and bought myself a new jacket and a nice pair of fleece long underwear...because it's friggin cold out there! I've hunted only four times this year and haven't seen a single deer yet? You would think with this weather, the deer would be moving all over the place? My buddy hunts the same places I do, has been out only twice and he's seen several does and two bucks already - go figure? Anyway, I look forward to hunting pretty heavy this weekend. Remember those bigger bucks won't be really moving until the first week in November (pre-rut). Right now there just hangin happy and waiten. With 4 tags for me this year...if it's brown it's going down!
