Silent Toms
Didn't get up early today because of the weather, so I didn't make it the woods until 6:45am. Walked over a hill in a field and could see 2 toms strutting, with a hen. I backed off and made a big loop around them to see if I could get setup in front of them. 15 minutes later, I was setup and could see the 2 toms locked in combat. For 10 minutes they fought. When they finished, I started the fighting purr and it brought them in my direction. The smaller of the 2 walked within 7 yards of me and spotted me. I never got a chance at the bigger of the two, but still a nice bird. 18lbs, 7 1/2 inch beard.

May 2nd Jake
Had another great morning. Roosted 2 birds last night, so we knew where they were. Walked to the edge of the field and jump 3 birds from the trees. Where were they last night? We never left until after 8:00pm. We set up in the field, but never heard anything. 25 minutes into the hunt, we walked to where the birds gobbled the night before. A few calls and they were on there way. 3 minutes later, 2 jakes and a hen came in. Dropped one jake...

Lake George Quad
Here what you don't do with a quad over open water. I watched this guy drive from the direction of the narrows, towards pilot knob, he slowed down because he saw the open water, but thought he could make it. The gap was only 5 feet across, but the open water was 40 feet long. The entire quad and him were under the water. I jumped from my chair that I was jigging from and by the time I took 4 steps towards him, he bobbed back to the surface and lunged onto the ice. He grabbed his quad and held on to it, while his friend hooked the hitch onto the rack...STUPID!!!! It took all those guys 30 minutes to get it out...

Ice Fishing Contest - Round Lake
A friend of mine is running his annual ice fishing contest on Round Lake. $15 per man and 100% payout. Every fish counts, pike, bass, etc. Of course the bass have to be released. We enter the ice along route 9 and walk directly across from the launch. If your interested, it runs from 06:00 to 3:00 and look for the big home made ice shanty on the opposite side of the lake. You may fish anywhere on the lake, but the fish will be weighed in on my friends hand held electronic scale.

Doe Down, Finally!!!
I went out with my bother in the blinding snow and then sleet. He shot a big doe yesterday, so he put me in his stand for the evening sit. I was in the stand for 40 minutes, the snow had just stopped, when I heard the snow crunch to my right. Coming through the thick brush, I could see a doe 20 yards away. As I stood up, my boot squeaked on the stand platform, making the doe to look my way. I stood like a statue for 10 minutes until she looked away. As I brought the scope up to get the cross hairs on her, the snow and rain completely fogged up my scope. Just my luck. I quickly pulled my glove off and with my finger, cleaned both lens. I put the cross hairs on her again, but it wasn't much better. I could just make her out through the thick brush, when I pulled the trigger. I was using my Remington 1100, with the slug barrel, so I knew I could that 220 gain slug through the brush. I was right, she went 30 yards. Back straps are in the frig...

My Week Of Vacation
I had a great week off, even though I didn't kill a deer. I 3 chances, missed a 6 pointer, had a 4 pointer sneak up behind and winded me and had a one sided fork horn buck chase a doe under my tree and wouldn't stop. Totals: 57 does, 7 different bucks and 35 turkeys. Next vacation, the 1st week of gun season. All those close encounters, will be eliminated..

Bucks Still Chasing...
At 06:40 this morning, I had a small doe run past me, but no boy friend following her. 10 minutes later, I could see a spike horn walking up the hill. He stopped at 75 yards and began to walk back where he came from. I turned over the can 2 times and he turned and started back up the hill. He just wouldn't commit. As I watched him walk into the thick patch, he started chasing another doe, along with another buck. I couldn't make out his rack size and they never came back out.

2 Great Days...
Yesterday I had a nice 4 pointer walking a ridge searching for love. He didn' respond to the grunt call and the can, but when I did a snort wheeze, that got his attention. He walked towards me, but wouldn't commit. This morning started off great. I had another 4 pointer walk right to my tree, down wind. As I prepared for the shot, thinking he was going to walk by, he stopped 10 yards from the tree. He then turned and walked away. I had him gutted, but that never happened. 1 hour later a big doe came bounding right at me tree and ran directly under it. Not far behind was a one sided fork horn. Nothing on the right side. He skirted my stand 15 yards, but I couldn't get him to stop. When he did, he was 15 yards behind me, but facing away from me. Not a good shot. The chase began again and took him away from me. After that I had 5 more does feed around me, but no boy friends. 2 does tonight...

Sunday Blues
Went out this morning and grnuted in a nice six pointer to 17 yards. He stood there for 3 minutes or so and then began to walk. I drew the bow he stopped and settled the pin. As I released, he reacted and turned towards me slightly. The arrow hit him forward through I think through the brisket. Allot white hair. Tracked him for a long way, dripping blood every 10 feet of so. Never found him. Very disappointed. Practice, practice and practice and then this. I have the week off, so back up early again...

Is The Rut Here Yet???
The morning was calm and cold. At 6:55 I had 2 fawns chasing each other all around my stand. At 7:55 I watched 8 does walk 40 yards past me. Not one had antlers. At 8:30, another 7 walked in the same direction as the fitst 8 did. Again, no antlers. Maybe one will come into heat soon. At 11:00, I had a buck grunting on the ridge above me, but I never could see him. Hunt the does and the bucks will come...

Opening Day Doe
The morning was almost calm, with the light wind blowing from the northeast. The spot I hunted, was perfect for that wind. At 08:30, I could see a doe walking right at me. I turned on the video camera and by the time I was ready, she was standing at 10 yards, looking right at me. I let her continue on her way because there was 3 more right behind her. I waited until they walked past me and watched as the biggest of the 4 does gave me an easy 10 yard shot. I pulled back, settled the pin behind her shoulder and let the easton carbon arrow fly. Perfect shot. She went 40 yards and dropped. The Rage broadhead did it's job again. Once again, I have the whole hunt on video using the deer ridge camera mount.

I hit the woods by 4:45 and by 5:05, I shot a small jake on video. I used the video gun mount and mounted it to my shotgun, which it is designed to do. I set up and called in a flock of 12 birds. 10 yard shot. The best part, is it's all on film, so I will have it foreverI can't wait to try this on deer...

Hey nuts, happy October!!! The season is finally here. I'm heading out after work to do a little turkey/scouting hunting. I bought a video camera mount for my bow/gun. http://www.deerridgeinnovations.com/ I have been practicing with it mounted on my bow and it works pretty good. Adds the weight of the camera to your bow, but I have the Sony Handy cam, which isn't to heavy. Good luck this season to everyone!!!!!

2 For 2 On Turkeys
Another great morning. I was out late on May 2nd, so I planned on sleeping in on Sunday. I hit the road around 7:10 and arrived at the turkey woods around 7:30. I got out of the car, put on my vest, my call in mouth and made 3 or 4 yelps. The woods exploded with gobbles. I ran 75 yards to an open field and setup the decoys. I cut and yelped and 3 birds to my left were going crazy and 1 to my right was joining in. Within 10 minutes, 2 jakes walked within 15 yards of me, but I let them walk, hoping a long beard was with them. To the right, I could see the 3rd bird was also a jake, but wouldn't enter the field. As they walked back up the ridge they came from, I picked up the decoys and looped around them to the left and setup again. The birds continued to gobble at everything I though at them. You have to love those jakes. For 30 minutes they gobbled, but wouldn't commit. I moved another 75 yards closer and began calling. 3 jakes walked back down the ridge right to me, so I squeezed the trigger on the 1st bird. 17lb jake, 3 1/2 beard.

Long Beard Down!!!
Had a good opening day, worked a bird for 1 1/2, but couldn't connect. The 1st setup, I had him within 75 on video, but he wouldn't commit. Setup 2 more times on him, but he just wouldn't come in.
This morning I woke up a little late and hit the woods by 5:50. I could hear a bird, even with the wind blowing, at 400 yards +. I worked my way towards him and could tell he was in a big open field. I thought he may be with hens, but I needed to cut the distance. The final setup put me within 150 yards from the edge of the field. That was as close as I wanted to get. I started cutting pretty hard and then yelping and the bird cut me off gobbling hard. He gobbled 10 times from the field and within 5 minutes, I could see him walking the edge of the woods. One more soft yelp and he fanned out and commited to the woods. He walked to within 35 yards of me and where I shot him. 21lbs, 9 1/4" beard, 1" spurs.

Back Yard Scrape
On Monday, my Dad was putting down winterizer on his front lawn, when looked towards the back yard, only to see a 4 pointer walk out from behind his shed to the yard. As he watched, the buck began to make a scrape right on his back lawn. He scraped, layed his scent down and then scraped aain. He couldn't beleive what he watched. The buck then walked right back into the thick field where he came from..

I went out with my brother this morning, but of course not to hunt, but to film him. We sat just 40 yards from where I killed my 8 pointer opening day and saw 5 does and one buck. I filmed a doe walk within 20 of my brother at 06:45. At 07:15 or so, I heard a twig snap and standing 10 yards behind me was a 3 or 4 pointer. He had his nose to the ground looking for love. I set my brother 10 yards in front of me and off to my right. He turned to look at the sound, but instead of looking back at me over his left shoulder, he turned to his right, never even seeing the buck. The buck must have seen him move and walked directly away from me. At 8:00, 4 more does fed their way, right past my gut pile. I was able to get nice video of 5 out of the 6 deer, but the one I wanted to get, got away....

Opening Day 8 Pointer
I was in my tree just before 06:00 am and it was quite and warm. Thinking it was going to rain, I was prepared to get wet. At 07:15, I looked to my right and I could see this buck walking the ridge 60 yards away. I could see he had his nose to the ground, so I gave him 2 softs grunts. He stopped and looked my way. He was almost at the opening where I could shoot him, when he turned and walked right at me. The cross hairs were already on him, when he stopped at 35 yards, looking up in the tree at me. Even though he was facing me, I knew the Remingtom slug would do it's job. It did, I dropped him right in his tracks. I knew this could be my best buck, but I didn't realize it until I had my hands on him. A perfect 8 pointer, 150lbs or so dressed. Just a great morning

Nebraska 11 Pointer
Here is a better picture of the 11 pointer my cousin shot with bow in Nebraska. They return home on Wednesday. I have to say, if you can handle the 20 hours of travel, it really isn't that expensive. $36 for the hotel room, $180 for non-resident bow tag, gas, tolls and food and you are looking at around $1000 person person, if that. And remember, they are hunting state land.

4 pointer
I had a great morning today. I had a small yearling walking through the woods, bleating for mommy. At 9:20, I had a nice 4 pointer, with his nose to the ground searching for love. It walked into a thick patch, so I grunted and hit the doe can. He walked right back out and my way. 24 yard chip shot and I missed judged the yardage. Shot him for 20 or so and the arrow flew right under his chest. Oh well, maybe next time...

I saw 4 does and one buck today. He chased the doe all around the woods, but not by my tree. Maybe tomorrow...

Nebraska Buck
My cousins make their annual trip to Nebraska and this is their 4th year. They have killed 4 great bucks and here is another one, 10 pointer. They never got there until Saturday late morning, setup their stands and only hunted for 90 minutes or so and he killed this deer. Bucks were chasing does everywhere. They were suppose to be there on 10/24, but my other cousin (not pictured) had emergency surgery, which delayed their trip. It looks like it could have been a good omen.

2 Does
Another great morning. I had two does feeding 15 yards in front of me for 30 minutes. The smaller of the two bedded down and stayed for almost an hour. The bigger doe was feeding on apples and nearly choked to death in front of me. You could see that she was really struggling to breath, staggering back and fourth and her tail was wagging really fast. She finally vomitted and everything that she had eaten came up. I wouldn't want to have to put my tag on that one...

Crazy Day of Hunting
This morning was perfect, but only 1 small doe. I sat until 11:00. As I'm driving down the long driveway to park my truck, 3 does standing in my way. Good sign, NOT. I get into my stand by 1:45, perfect night. I'm there for about 40 minutes and I start hear a popping noise. Soon I see a 14 or 15 year old running through the woods about 125 yards away, carrying something. He stops and hides behind a tree. I then realize that I'm in the middle of a paint ball war. I can't beleive this. They work their way away, so the woods begins to settle down. Next the land owner starts up his Kobota tractor, with the bush hog attachment. He begins to cut the field 75 yards from me and then heads into the woods, branches and brush flying everywhere. I climb down and take a seat in a different area. I see nothing, until I get back to my truck, 3 does standing 10 feet from where I park. Maybe tomorrow.

Doe Down!!
A great morning, quiet, but you couldn't hear anything walking. At 08:10, I turned my head and standing 15 feet behind my tree, 2 does feeding. I never heard them sneak in. I stood up, reached for my bow and the biggest one spotted me move. I froze and she finally turned and tried to get down wind of me. She did, but my Scent Blocker did it's job. 15 yard shot, but as I watched her run, she stopped 40 yards away and then just walked away. I couldn't beleive she didn't tip over. 30 minutes later, I got down and my arrow was covered in blood. I walked about 10 yards and I could see 2 deer start running away from me. I backed out and came back 4 hours later. I followed good blood for 60 yards and then nothing. I was getting discouraged, thinking I didn't make a good shot. There was no sign of guts on my arrow or the ground. At 12:40, I looked to my left and there she was, staring at me 15 yards away, bedded down. I knocked another arrow and I had a small window in front of her front shoulder. Perfect shot. She jumped backwards and fell over. She was dead within 10 seconds. Backstraps tonight!!!

Gobbling Gobbler!!!
Finally, a turkey gobbling to my calls. I went out before work this morning and had a turkey gobbling around 06:15. I worked him for about 20 minutes. I was in the middle of a field, that has a treed hedge row in the middle. The bird gobbled from the top of a ridge that runs along the edge of the field. I called him down a pretty steep hill, up a gully and then into the field. I could see him walking about 100 yards away, but he just kept walking across the field. I don't think he even saw the decoys, because he never gobbled again as he disappeared some where on the other side. My dad had a long beard and a hen in his back yard yesterday. The tom strutted all around her. The birds are there, but where??????????

Another Jake and a buck
I went out before work today and once again, heard nothing gobbling. I did my usual walk for the 1st hour and nothing. I sat where I shot the 1st jake and called for a while. At 06:20, a buck walked up to me me feeding. He had 2 inch knobs, so that was nice to see. As he is standing there, I look out into the field and here comes a jake. The deer saw the turkey and then the turkey spotted the deer. I started yelping softly and the deer got a little nervous and moved 30 yards to my left. The jake walked within 3 steps of me. It made my heart beat pretty good, but I let him walk. Pretty exciting morning.

Jake Down!!!
I setup this morning, hopeing on taking a bird with the bow. I could hear one bird gobbling from the roost for 30 minutes or more. He even gobbled after he hit the ground, but then got quite. I sat until 7:00 and headed back to the car, this time to grab the gun. I packed up the portable blind and headed back out. I set the decoys up in a small field and called for 20 minutes or so on and off. I never heard another bird gobble, but as I looked across the field, I could see this bird 250 yards out, coming my way. He walked right up to the decoys, when I took him down. The H&R 12 gauge almost took my shoulder off with the 3" mag.

Turkeys are in the mood
The toms really have the hens flocked up. I did allot of driving over the weekend and saw 8 different toms with flocks of hens. Hopefully most will be mated by the 1st week of the season. Nothing like seeing that long beard in full strut...Below is a link that I thought you may be interested in. The Peregrine Falcon is nesting again under the Dunn Bridge. It looks like she has 4-5 eggs.

Active Sunday Morning
I got into my stand at 05:50 and waited until the sun came up. At 08:00, I grunted a couple times and I happen to look behind me and I could see 2 flags waving bye, bye. Most likely does. 20 minutes later, down the ridge came 3 does, mother and her 2 fawns. Walked 25 yards from my tree. No 4K doe permits again this year, but I do have a 4B...Oh well, still a good morning..

Deer Down
This morning was clear and cold, 17 degrees. My brother met me at 05:40 this morning and we headed to our spots. At 08:05, I had a small 3 or 4 pointer walking in the thicket, with his nose to the ground. At 09:00, my brother called my cell to check up and see what time we were sitting until. I told him 10:00 or so. He was a little cold so he headed back to the truck 5 minutes after I talked to him. As he was walking back to the truck, he saw a 4 pointer sneaking in this thick field. The deer gave him a 30 to 40 yard shot with his muzzle loader. He hit the buck in front of his front shoulders, but he still was able to get into the thickest crap you could imagine. I heard the shot, so I waited 10 minutes and called him back. He explained what happened so I told him not to push the deer and wait until I get there. He showed me where the buck went, so we decided to split up and swing around each side of this thick patch. I walked 20 yards and up jumps his buck. I watched him run about 25 yards or so and go right back down. I called my brother over and he finished him off. His first deer with his muzzle loader and first deer of the season.

Quiet morning
I was walking into my stand at 05:30 this morning, when 40 yards from the stand, 2 deer slowly move off. It figues. At 08:00, the fog was still rolling through the woods and the trees were dripping from the rain that had fallen early that morning. I looked to my left and a really big coyote moved through around 40 yards away. I never could get a shot because he moved through the opening to quick by the time I saw him. My brother had 8 different does near his stand, but no bucks...

What a great morning, 3 does and 3 bucks. I video a 3 pointer walk under my stand and watched 2 other 1 1/2 year olds chasing a doe all around the woods. They looked like small 4 pointers. The body on the one deer was pretty big though. The temp was 23 this morning and no wind, perfect..

Spike Horn
It was a great morning, crisp and cold. At 07:00, a doe walked in the open hard woods about 100 yards away. Around 08:00, a button buck walked around me and then bedded down. At 09:15, my cell phone vibrated and it was my brother asking if I saw anything. As I was talking to him, I noticed a good size deer walking in the thicket. I put the phone down and grabbed my grunt call. I hit the grunt tube and out walked this fat spike horn. One shot and dropped him in his tracks. I picked the phone back up and my brother was laughing and couldn't beleive that I just shot. This deer will be made into sausage and jerky..Great Day...

Rage Broad Heads
Hey nuts, everyone using the Rage Broad Heads, including myself, Dick's has pulled them off the shelves because of the controversy around them not being a true expandable head. A friend of mine works at the Crossgates store and he told me this tonight. I ask, what is the difference between a fixed head and this head? I'll have to get them at Flying Arrow or order them from Cabelas because I won't shoot another head now. You guys that shot that head this season, know the devastating hole and blood trail it put on your deer. Not that a fixed blade doesn't do the same thing, but when it comes to shooting field points and then screwing these heads on, there was no adjusting at all for me. We will most likely be hearing more on this subject.

Great morning!!!
Another great morning in the stand. I saw 3 different bucks, 2 spike horns that walked under my stand together and a small 6 pointer that responded to the rattle bag. I turned over the can, did a snort wheeze and then the rattle bag. The 1st time nothing, but after the 2nd sequence, a little pointer came in investigating. Listen to ihunt4food, the woods are alive. This week coming up should be great. Here is a pic of one of the spike horns. Not a great picture, but you can see how close he was.

8 Pointer Down!!!
What a morning. Was in my stand by 06:00, hunting with my cousin and my uncle. At 09:20, a nice buck is sneaking through in front of me 40 yards out. I grunted and he would stop, but didn't seem interested. After I lost sight of him, 3 minutes or so later, my uncle and cousin were right behind him. My cousin hit this deer 1 hour before and were tracking him. Now I know why he would respond to my grunts. We backed out for an hour so we didn't push him because he was just walking and already had gone 200 yards from where he 1st hit him. We again starting tracking and 30 yards from where we stopped, we jumped him. My heart sank. He went 20 yards or so and bedded down. We watched him for 35 minutes or so and finally he died. My cousin's 1st deer ever and with the bow. We all pretty happy...

Opening Day Deer
Opening day was good this morning, with me taking a nice fat spike horn. 6 inch spike on one side, but should taste really good. I video taped the hunt, but I must have hit the camera before I shot because when I reviewed the tape, you can hear the shot, but no impact on film. The deer came out at 09:15 and gave me a 22 yard shot. If you are using the new Rage Head, wow, what a job it did. Quartering away shot and the arrow came out next to his front shoulder. The entry hole was hug, like I hit him with a slug. The blood trail was amazing. A blind person could have followed it. 70 yards before he fell. Good luck to everyone out there.

Trail Camera Tip
HollowvilleHunter, with the Wildview camera that I am using, I found a very easy way to check my pics, without removing the camera from the woods. I bought 2 512mb memory cards, one for the camera and one to replace the card in the camera. I bring my digital camera with me, remove the card in the trail camera and view them on my digital camera. If the pics are good, I replace the card with the blank one. If they aren't good, I delete ALL the pics and place it back into the camera. A 512mb memory card is the max that you can us with this camera. Just remember, when you remove the memory card, make sure when you place the new card in the trail camera, that it is blank or your camera will ignore the memory card.

Hey Elmer, I ordered my scentlok clothes online. Cabelas or BassPro has it. I carry all my clothes in a big rubber maid container and use scent away spray and wash my clothes with scent away detergent. Years ago before scent control was around, my cousins made fun of me because I put small pine limbs in with my clothes to give it the pine smell. If I only new then what I know today about scent elimination. I have the scentlok savanna clothing, uninsulated. It's big enough to place over all my clothes in the cold weather and still stay pretty warm.

Stolen Tree Stand
During my turkey hunt this morning, I discovered one of my lockon tree stands had been stolen. You can't even feel comfortable on property that you have permission on, to leave your stands hung. They must have had good bolt cutter, because the chain and lock were heavy duty to cut through. The sad thing is, it was most likley another hunter. I hope they fall out of it!!!!

Long Beard Down!!!
I was unable to get right out at sunrise, but it seemed to work out. I hunted from 7:00 - 09:00 and saw 1 jake and 5 hens, but no shot. I grabbed a quick bite to eat and headed back out and at 09:45, I had a bird respond. He gobbled several times from about 200 to 300 yards away. I moved to my right, to get on the same ridge that he was on. By the time I reached the bottom of the 1st ridge, he was closing the distance quick. I moved another 30 yards and setup. He continued to gobble, so I kept quite. Within minutes the long beard appeared 20 yards in front of me for a perfect shot. 22 pounds, 10 inch beard, 1 1/4 spur on one side and 1" on the other. Pictures to soon follow...

Great Buck!!
I'm driving home from the Price Chopper grocery store in Slingerland and when I got to the police training center, a nice 8 pointer, with a 16 to 17" spread, was bounding across their property, across New Scotland Ave and then over to Holy Names High School. Hey Elmer, it's on your side of the road now. It should be a beautiful buck this season.

Hello everyone, I received a few gift cards from Dick's for Christmas, so I was thinking of putting them towards a new black powder gun. They carry the TC and the CVA .50 caliber. The TC is out my price range, but the CVA is in the low $200 range. Any recommendations???

4 Pointer Down
What a great morning...Around 08:15, I had 2 does, one really big doe, walk right under my stand. At 08:45, 5 more does showed up and fed around my stand for about 10 minutes. Then from where the does came from, the 4 pointer showed up. I waited until he fed up to the does and at 45 yards, I hit him with a Remington slug, right behind the shoulder and dropped him. The funny thing is that the does never spooked. They watched as I unloaded and lowered my gun, put on my back pack and climbed to the base of my tree with portable tree stand. Of course I have a doe permit, but for Albany county and not Rensselaer county. Pictures to follow...

Caught with my pants down
Well, here is one for the funniest things contest. I went into my spot to move a stand for opening day on Saturday. Of course I will be hunting with the bow because the land owner won't let us hunt with the gun, but that's another story. I walked to my lockon stand and when I got there, my stomach started to not feel so good, (Hot buffalo chicken wrap the night before). So, I ran 100 yards or so away from stand and dropped my pants. Before I was finished, I heard a buck grunt. I looked up and there 30 yards in from of me, was a 3 pointer and spike, chasing a small doe right at me. I reached in my pulled down pants for my cell phone to take a picture, but the bucks would not enter the woods, (I wonder why?) They stood there for 3 minutes or so and finally chased the doe in a different direction. I didn't have my bow, but what a site this must have been...:0)

5 Pointer
I started my vacation on 11/13 and this week so far has been great. 11/13 didn't start out so good, with me missing a 6 pointer, twice. The first shot hit a vine, so I knocked another arrow and he walked to about 25 yards in front of me. This time, my bow string hit my arm and the arrow flew just under him. Well today, 11/14, there was some light rain falling, but with the rut in full swing, I had to be in my stand. I got a late start this morning and never climbed the tree until a little after six. As I was screwing in my bow hanger, a small buck walked within 18 yards of my stand. He spooked and slowing walked away. It would have been a little early to get a shot, but it would have been nice to get a better look at him. At 06:40, the woods lit up with deer running. A big doe came running from my left and stopped 20 yards in front of me, looking back. As I watched her, I could hear the buck grunting. She then started to move to my right, bringing the 5 pointer right in front of me. As I drew the bow, the doe decided to run under my stand, bringing him in the same direction. He took 2 steps and looked right up in the tree at me. He then took 2 more steps to his right, giving me a perfect 10 yard shot. The buck went 60 yards and dropped. Just a great moring....

Good Weekend
Had a good weekend with seeing allot of deer. Saw 10 different does on Saturday and saw a 3 pointer a 20 yards, but elected to pass. I have the last week of bow off, so hopefully I can score on something a little bigger. I had a button buck feeding at the base of my tree, which I took a picture with my cell phone. At 06:15 am on Sunday, I had a buck grunting and chasing a doe, but I couldn't make out his head. The rut activity should begin to pick up these next few days, so it should be a great time to get in the woods.

Duck and Goose Hunting
We headed out to the Hoosick River on 12/04 to try a little duck and goose hunting. We drove 40 minutes north and found the hoosick running to high to even attempt to hunt it. I wasn't dying for a duck. We hunted the field next to the river, but only had a few flocks fly over and not even look. We did see an adult bald eagle, which made the morning. Flew right over us so we got a great look..

Nice morning, but no deer....
I hunted Albany County trying to fill my doe permit, but nothing. At 09:30, I made a small drive for a friend, but kicked up nothing. Deer tracks every where, so sometime in the late night, just after the snow, the deer were moving. The spike horn I shot on 11/20, tastes great!

Good weekend
At 07:20 this morning, I took a nice spike horn. 8" and 6" spikes. I placed my scent drag on my boot before I walked in the woods and soaked it with doe-in-estrus lure and the deer walked in on a string. 35 yard shot with a slug and it put him down for good. I still have a doe permit left, so if the weather holds up this week, I'll try to fill that before my vacation ends. Opening day I saw 5 deer, so the weekend hasn't been bad.

The weather was very warm today, so I decided to move my stand down wind of the main run that I sit next to. For some reason, I placed my lock on stand, up wind of the this good run and when the north wind blows, my scent would blow directly over the run. I realized this the day before I shot the 3 pointer with the bow. That morning I used my portable and sat 40 yards down wind from my lock on and was able to sit undectected. I did get a nice picture today, but a little blurry, of a pialated wood pecker. The stand is noe ready for the gun season.

If anyone is interested in donating their venison to the regional food bank, there is a butcher off of Western Ave that participates in the program. Bill Leary, 438-2755 or 281-2755, 117 Arcadia Ave. It dosen't cost you anything and if you file long form taxes, you get to deduct $65 for charitable contributions. If you just want a butcher to process your deer, the cost is $55, cut and wrapped.

Deer Down
On 10/30 at 07:15, I shot a nice 3 pointer with the bow. 15 yard shot and the deer went 25 yards and went down. I used our bathroom scale to weigh the deer. This was interesting. I first weighed the saw horse, 14.5 pounds. Then I placed the deer, in the saw horse, 120.5. A whopping 106 pounds. Once my new PC arrives this week, I will post the pictures of this "monster". With limited time to hunt, I couldn't be choosey.

I left work at 03:30 and was in my stand by 04:00. At 05:25, I had a doe and 2 fawns feeding around me. They worked there way down the ridge and moved on. As it got dark, I headed back to my truck. As I got about 40 yeards from the truck, there stood 2 deer, one small buck and I think a doe. I could have saved myself the walk and hunted right there. It was good to see a few deer....

Opening day went well. I shot a big doe at 04:00 pm with the bow. Saw 5 deer, 3 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon. Highway Deer
Hey Elmerfudd, deer are beginning to appear on the highways edge feeding. A few pretty big ones too! No antlers yet, just flat heads. I checked my food plot that I planted this spring and remarkable, it came up pretty well. I planted Imperial Whitetail Clover NoPlow. I cleared a 50 x 100 area on an old loggin road and used a hand held spreader. I took a few pictures, they will soon follow. The deer seem to be using it because there a several good runs beat down leading to it. You can also see several stems, but no leafs on allot of plants. We will have to see what the fall brings....

A good day, but no bird
I hunted 2 1/2 hours before work today and had 3 long beards and two hens, just outside the decoys. Unfortunately, I was hunting with the bow. The land owner doesn't want me hunting with the shot gun because his property boarders a housing development. Pretty exciting to watch them gobbling so close from my portable blind!!

Are They Anti's?
Last summer I received permission to hunt 55 acres in Albany county. I killed 2 5 pointers, one with the bow and one with the shot gun. I always take care of the land owner with meat and last season was no exception. 2 weeks ago, I tilled and planted whitetail clover on an old logging road near where I hunted. I went back and the land owner stopped me and asked how could I "slaughter" deer over and area where I seeded and said it was like baiting. The sad thing is that he gave permission to plant the clover and never indicated that it would be an issue. They were the nicest people during the season and when they were enjoying the 2 bags of meat and sausage that I gave them. Now they have turned on me. At this point, I still have permission, but for how long, no one knows.

05/02/05
Woke up at 04:30am and rushed to get a couple of hours in before work. The birds began gobbling at 06:00, but were really far off. At 06:30, I had a tom working in, but just wouldn't enter the tilled field I was in. A hen worked in past the decoys and eventually walked to where the tom was. I hadn't heard the gobbler for 30 minutes and I had to head to work. Oh well...

Ice Fishing
Has anyone been ice fishing on Lake George this season? I went out on 01/30 and caught 2 perch. There was a man and his kid fishing within 50 yards of us and he caught a 23" salmon and a 26" pike. We were fishing 300 yards out from million $$$ beach, in 30 to 45 feet of water. I usually do well at Sabbath Day Point or near Hearth Stone Camp grounds, but my Brother some how convinced me to fish there. Temps were warm, near 30 and the ice was 4 to 8 inches thick.

The Season Ends
As the season comes to the end, I really have to say, that I made every opportunity count. I began hunting a new spot in Albany County and I just started learning my way around the property. The deer sightings were down, but I was lucky enough for the deer I did see, I made the shot count. I arrowed the 5 pointer on 11/8 and shot another 5 pointer on 11/23 with the shot gun. There are some nice log roads I plan on planting Imperial Clover No Plow in the spring, so we will see what happens. Allot of great stories and talk on huntingnuts. I'm glad I ran into an old friend, ElmerFudd. To find out that he now hunts, blew me away. I wish I could have updated the log as much as him. Great Job Kev.

Another 5 pointer
11/22/04 was uneventful for me, not even seeing one deer. 11/23 was a little different. I climbed my tree with my portable stand and settled in for the morning hunt. I wasn't in the stand for 30 minutes, 06:45 or so and I could hear a buck grunting from behind me. I picked up my grunt call and hit a few notes. I could hear the deer walking, but could not see him yet. I waited for for a few minutes and I used the "Can". This brought him into site. I grunted again, but the buck would not give me a clean shot. As I waited and watched, he walked back and forth, with his nose to the ground. Finally at 70 yards, I grunted and he stopped in the open, where I dropped him in his tracks. The longest shot I made with a slug. It was a short, but great hunt. Photo to come soon.

5 Pointer
On Saturday, 11/06, again I could not buy a deer or even a sighting. On Sunday morning 11/07, things changed for the good. At 06:25, I began a few grunts on the grunt call and began to listen. The wind was blowing from the South at 5 mph, which is not good for the spot I am hunting. After five minutes, I could hear a deer walking, directly down wind from me. Thank god for my scent lock suit. I grunted again and I could hear the deer stop. It began walking again and at 60 yeards, I could see it was a buck. He walked to within 20 yards and turned broad side. I had a 3 to 4 foot window to shoot through, so when the buck hit that window, I stopped him with a mouth grunt. The arrow hit him perfect and the buck went around 50 yards before dropping. I still waited nearly an hour, just to make sure. I found the first 1/2 of my arrow about 20 yeards from where I hit the deer. The blood trail was easy to follow and after another 30 yards or so, there was the buck. The deer was a nice fat 5 pointer.

1st Turkey With The Bow
Everyone that bow hunts, knows how annoying turkeys can be in the deer woods. Last night 20 minutes before dark, the flock starting heading back to the ridge where I hunt to roost. They began fighting, scratching, yelping, clucking and annoying the death out me. As they approached from my left, I found a small six inch window through a small tree, that I could get an arrow through. As the fitst 6 or seven walked by, I drew and waited for one to stop. One hit the hole and began scratching, so I let the arrow fly. I hit the bird square in the chest with a shock wave 100 broad head. With two fall tags in my pocket, I had filled my tag with the bow. This was the first turkey I had ever shot with the bow. No deer sightings, but It was still exciting.
