Operation Jackhammer
Thumbs up to DEC! They arrested 107 people for jacking deer at night. One of the spots I hunt is down in Austerlitz. Every year there is one stretch of road where jackers leave their carcasses. If it has antlers they take the head and back straps and if it's a doe they just take the back straps. Last year we counted 8 carcasses. We called DEC but the officer said it was a very difficult area to catch someone.

A year for rude hunters
I hunt a lot down on Schodack Island. I hunt on the back side where most people don't attempt because of how thick it has gotten. I purchased a Fiskars Brush Thinning Machete. I hacked a very clear path to where I hang my climber. Now I either go in way before light and come out around 11 or I go in around 1 and come out after it is too dark to shoot. Now, by the time you pack everything up its pretty much dark. I put clip on trail markers out. All bow season they have been there. The second day of rifle I went in at 1 they were there but when I packed up and left someone had come through and taken them all down. I spoke to Kathy at the office and she said that none of the employees or rangers would have taken them. Best I can figure this guy is not a still hunter but a stalker. I've seen his footprints in quite a few places back there. Now I don't care the fact that he is hunting in the same spot I do as it is public land. I don't even care that he uses the trail that took me a half of a day cutting and the other half removing 6000 thorns from every inch of me. But I have bad knees and ankles. I cut these trails and put the markers up so I wouldn't get caught up in these vines and swamp. Anyone who has hunted down there knows after it gets dark its a tough place to find your way. I can't wait to run into this guy. At the very least he owes me $10. I used about 18 markers. A pack of 10 at Dick's is 5. Oh, a little side note. About The Brush thinner, if you use any type of machete to clear trails you have to get this. I have tried all kinds of machetes. The thorn bushes are the worst. This thing cut through everything even 2 to 3 inch trees. Its a little more than a machete but well worth it. You can pick up a small pocket sharpener to put an edge on it. It keeps a great edge. http://www.amazon.com/Fiskars-7860-Brush-Axe/dp/B000F99IEU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1259846973&sr=8-1

Help I'm Drowning!!LOl
Hey Elmer, I went to the Island Saturday around 2 p.m. I sat for a little bit when 3 does come walking in and start to feed right under my stand. I'm in no hurry to shoot anything just yet so I watched them and let them feed. They stayed for about a half hour and started to wander off. About the time I was watching them I noticed something I didn't notice before. My tree, which an hour earlier was on dry ground, was now sitting in the middle of Lake Hudson. The Tide came in and flooded the swamp. By the time I had gotten down I had to carry my back pack and tree stand to dry ground to pack it up. I had forgotten that there was lower ground between my stand and the trail. I get to this lower area I'm wading across a lake full of vines, stumps and down trees. Needless to say I decided to take a refreshing dip in the sweet smelling waters of the Hudson. I got back to the car and only to realize that my quiver, which had 4 Carbon Express arrows with Rage 2 Blade Broad heads, was now void of arrows. Being just a little disenchanted, at this point, I grabbed my flash light and went back in. The only positive thing of the day was that when I got to the spot I came out on the trail (still thinking of the 200 yards of swamp I have to cross to the point where I had fallen) all 4 were laying on the ground right at the edge of the trail. I now know what you were talking about when you said about the time you tracked that deer through the mud. Boy that is some sweet smelling stuff.

Browning tattoo
I saw a pic on the Browning website. They have a Show us your Buckmark contest. I brought the pick along with an original buckmark and had the kid at Lark Tattoo design one for me. When he put the transfer on I knew I loved it. 7 hours later I was even happier. Attached is the tat that gave me the idea. The artist did an awesome job creating his own.

Finally
Well, I took last week off from work. I went hunting everyday with my buddies. We did drives in the morning and came back in the afternoon and did them again. I fired my 300 win mag 3 times. Each time striking its intended target. A fox and a coyote at 60 and 70 yards moving. And a 4 pointer who stopped, only briefly, at about 40 yards. Its amazing what a 300 Win Mag Ballistic Silvertip does at 40 yards. There was actually no exit. Now all that is left is to get one with my muzzle loader.

Schodack Island Forum
I just spoke to Linda at Alex Shannon's office. She said she just received a press release. There will be a public forum at Schodack Town Hall on Thursday October, 30th at 7:00PM. The town is meeting with Reps from the State Office of Parks and Recreation to talk about the park's status. I have a copy of the press release. If anyone wants a copy email me @ mcapano2@nycap.rr.com. The more people that show up the better. So get the word out. Please.

Important
I figured I would post this as a thread not just as a response:
This morning, after I read the article on Schodack Island being closed, I called Martin Reid (Rensselaer County Legislator). I spoke with his assistant Linda. She had said they are working on the situation. She had told me that Alex Shannon would be the legislator working on this. You can call him at 518-270-2880 and let him know your feelings. I know a lot of people put in for their DMP for that area and can't use them now.

Fox Pro
Well, I got my FoxPro 2.5 years ago and have just used it for crow hunting. Over the weekend a friend of our mine complaining of the local yote population getting bigger and bigger. So I figured I'd use it for what I bought it for. My buddy and I set up in a ground blind over looking a large field surrounded by trees. I told my buddy I call the first one in and he'd shoot. We set up about 5:00 PM and gave it about 10 minutes to let everything settle. I started with the rabbit distress call and started the Jack-in-the-Box spinning for about a minute or two. I waited a few minutes and use the same call again. I waited another 3 minutes and used the Male invitation call. Within about 10 seconds a beautiful blonde yote step out about 80 yards to our right. She was looking directly at the J.I.B. We were in plain view but as long as the J.I.B was spinning he kept her focus away from us. My buddy was sitting on my left and slowly raised his Browning BAR Safari 30-06 in front of me. Fearing any sharp movement I kept my hands at my side (instead of covering my ears), closed my ears and braced for the report of the rifle. The percussion from the rifle was as devastating as the sound. I turned quickly to my right to capture a glimpse of the blonde yote run and disappear over a small knoll. We waited a few minutes he went to see where the yote had ran. She had expired about 20 yards from where she was shot. I have seen several Coyotes before but one is beautiful. She has no mange as a few Ive seen before. There are no scars on her. She has blond and orange fur. Ill post a pic when I get home and can transfer it from my camera and figure out how to downsize it. I just bought the Canon Xsi 12 megapixel camera so this photo is huge. Hopefully, I can figure that out.

Hunting Buddy
I have a question for you guys. I have seen a few guys use the word we in their posts. I do all the time. I refer to my friend Jerry. His parents and Mine were friends all their lives. We grew up together. We have been hunting together since 1978. My question is who are your hunting buddies. I have others, when their not to busy with their other addictions (Les Paul). I have hunted with Elmer and have really enjoyed it. He definitely has a passion for hunting. But for the most part my friend Jerry and I hunt together every weekend, both days, and any day we can sneak out of work early. We hunt from Sept 1, which starts crow, right up until the last day of crow. Summer time he fishes every day. I play softball almost every day but when I'm not playing softball I'm out on the boat as well.

300 Win Mag
Hey Elmer? Any luck on the Browning? Were you looking at the Bolt action or the semi. I have the Bar Safari 300 Win Mag w/BOSS. That is semi-automatic. If you would like you could take it and shot it. I have several boxes of older shells I only use for sighting in. I was skeptical about a semi-auto mag rifle. The first time it shot it I changed my mind. Smooooooottttthhhhhh. No kick, what so ever. I have the Browning A-Bolt 22-250. That is a blast to shoot too. But nothing compares to X CaliBAR AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH(angels singing in the backround)

Crow Hunting

This is from Last year. We always get a lot from this one area. We do use crow decoys. They have them at Dick's. We've been using an old turkey carcass. It has been working really well this year. I just don't have any photos from this year yet. I am the one on the right. That was 100 lbs ago.

Going Home Sick Today
I'm having a problem with my eyes. I can't see myself staying at work all day while there is a perfectly good day out there to hunt. I hunt on this piece of property that this woman only allows 6 people to hunt. Last year there was a monster there. I was talking to a guy at my butcher last night that hunts on property adjacent to hers. He said him and his hunting buddies keep seeing this monster over on her property out in the field. That's the field I sit on normally. Well guess I have to go there now. Just like last year I'll never see it but I can't help think. Opening day in the afternoon I kicked a very large deer in the woods near the field. I never saw the head but the body was very large. I later went and found his tracks. The print hoof and spur was longer than my hand. I know a few of you know me but for those who don't Im 68". I have a very large hand. The hoof, itself, was as long as my index finger. I actually just measured my hand. From the base of my palm to the tip of my middle finger is 9". So the spread from hoof to spur was a little over 9". I could actually make 2 or 3 meals out of this deer.

Ok, when I first started coyote hunting I did a few web searches for advise. I found the below link. I've been a member for over a year now and go on from time to time to read up on anything new. Well I was on there today, in the Deer Hunting forum (link below). You gotta see some of these deer. http://www.nodakoutdoors.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=45533

My weekend stunk
Im envious of all of you. I was put on a medicine that lowers you immune system. If you get a cold you have to stop taking it. On Friday I started getting a sore throat and didnt want to make it worse. I went out Saturday afternoon for a little bit. I jumped 1 very large deer (never got to see if it had antlers). I saw the print though, very large. I saw 3 more does at separate time. About 4:10 I started getting very cold and went home. I stayed in the rest of the weekend. I am going to take a little time off this week. Elmer I am going to go out Wednesday afternoon. Im bringing my gear to work with me. I also have Friday off. Let me know if any of the days are good for you.

Almost
I brought my friend to Schodack Island yesterday. Got up in my stand about 1:30. About 4:10 I was thinking, great I tell him about all the deer I see down here and not one comes through. Just about 4:15 I can see a huge deer, at first I thought it was a doe, walking up the trail. I put 3 scent bombs with Code Blue on them. He comes right up the trail. As he gets closer I see he has spike horns. He is coming for the scent. He gets about 10 feet from my Picture Perfect shot, about 18 yards quartered away. All of a sudden he just bolts and runs about 40 yards from the stand. I don't know what startled him but there was something he didn't like. I can still shoot but with my buddy about 100 yards away and this thing walking towards him I figured why not just let him walk that way. About 3 minutes after he was out of sight I heard the snap of a bow. Down goes Frazier, Down goes Frazier. I don't know if you've every hunted the Island and walked through there. Now picture hauling a good size deer through the briars and thickets in the dark. We just made it to the car with the Ranger waiting for us to close up. Alas, I didn't get mine yet. That is twice this year I had a shot and chose to wait for the best shot. Oh well. Maybe next time.

I posted this as a reply but I believe we could all benefit from this. The term Kill is unacceptable! In its stead please replace any use of the word kill with the phrase, the cessation of life in a living system. Thank you.

Let's do It
Hey Elmer. I am off at 11 on both Thursday and Friday. I am hitting the Island Both days. I'll bring my stuff to work both days so we can get a good start. That spot where I sat before. On my GPS it showed the trail about 100 yards west so I headed that way. Sure enough It's about a 5 minute walk from my stand to the trail. Does you GPS allow you to upload Topographical maps? I have maps for the US. I got the Legend CX Bundle and bought a 2gig transflash memory card for it. It actually shows all the trails there.

Stop the insanity
I have to agree with Hollow and Live2. First, Casual, you say you wear no mask and frequent this site. Why are you not registered. Second, this is a Hunting web site. Everything on here ticks off the anti's. I have read a lot of Hollow's posts and have even written to him on here. He seems like a great guy. And if he's friends with Kevin he has to be. The guy made a great shot. He was just showing his skill with the bow. No malice was intended. Hollow good for you and great shot. I also agree with Live2 on the motorcycle analogy. Theyre not just illegal. They are dangerous. I was just thinking. Next time any of us get a deer we can clean it up. Prop it up and put a bowl of corn next to its mouth. We can say we are just feeding him, awe isn't that nice. Then everyone will be happy. We're doomed with this next National election anyway. All my friends are scrambling to get as many semi-autos as the can. Hey on TV they have hunting shows with kill shots all the time. None of these shows have done more damage than what Zumbo had said. The Outdoor channel put him back on.

What's up Elmer?
Hey Elmer? How is it going? I wanted to share this. I bought a video camera to bring hunting with me. I was looking for a mount for the tree or stand. I found this thing called the HunterCam Cradle. It was a bit pricy but I ordered it anyway. I got it today at work. It is awesome! Very solid. It clamps right to your tree stand. I bought the one for $169. I was very leery at first. I'm really glad I did. I'm taking tomorrow off. Going in the woods by my house in the A.M. then to the Island in the afternoon. Give me a call. I still have 11 days off. By the way I'm down to 280lbs (from 360). A lot easier to climb trees now.

Great Job By Dick's
I just bought a Triumph from Dick's. I took my 3 X 9 scope off my 22-250 and had this kid at Dick's, Jeremy, bore sight it for me. We went out Friday night to sight it in. First shot dead center paper. So the next day I went and bought a 6 X 24 scope for the 22-250. Also to let you guys know. Guilderland High School Football has a fundraiser card you can buy for 10 bucks. It's for $10 off $50, $15 off $75 or $20 off$100 or more. I've made 3 purchases at Dick's over 100 each and got the $20 off every time. Definitely worth the $10 dollars.

Browning A-Bolt 22-250
Wow, what a gun. We were shooting last weekend and my buddy was hitting a WD-40 can @ 600 yards. I got it because I wanted a smaller caliber for coyotes. 300 Win don't leave much. But I didn't think it would be as much fun as it is to shoot. I am looking into a Lee Reloader for both rounds. Hey, on another note. I think everyone got the email from the host. I am going to Wormburners Saturday. We all should. It is a great band. The drummer is a little vertically challenged, But the music is great. Lot of fun. Hope to see you there.
